Immigration

Ukrainian guests are being given “settled status” in the UK for three years. This gives them the right to the right to work, rent, claim benefits, study and access education and access the NHS.

Getting a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

If they have a Ukrainian International Passport, they are likely to have a 6-month "entry stamp". They will need to submit their biometrics within 6 months of arriving in the UK to extend their stay to 3 years and be issued with a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) as evidence of their immigration status. They can start the process to provide biometric information by completing the online form.

There is more information about how this should work on the Citizens Advice website:

and in the government’s Welcome Pack:

If your Ukrainian guest did not have a Ukrainian International Passport they will have already submitted their biometrics at a Visa Application Centre and they will have gained entry to the UK with a Visa vignette (a photo sticker, on a permission to travel letter) which is valid for 90 days. Shortly after they arrive in the UK, they will be sent a letter asking them to collect their Biometric Residence Permit and will therefore not need to apply for it. It will be available 2 weeks from the date of issue of their visa. They will need to collect it before the vignette expires, bringing with them the permission to travel document containing the vignette.

The Biometric Residence Permit is an important document and is evidence of a guest’s settled status and will be needed in order to, for example, facilitate opening a bank account and to be accepted by an employer as having the right to work.

If guests have any immigration related problems and need advice, this can be obtained from the Ukraine Advice Project UK (a group of volunteer lawyers giving free UK immigration and asylum advice to Ukrainian citizens affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine):
